Kaikoura is one of the few places where you can see whales and dolphins so close to shore, because it's an upwelling, where deep nutrient-rich ocean water comes up to the surface near the shore. One place there takes you out on a boat and lets you snorkel with the Dusky Dolphins that stay in the area. These are completely wild dolphins, they aren't trained or fed. So close you can reach out and touch them, but that scares them

Duskys are a very playful species of dolphin, smaller than bottlenose

"One of the best views in all of New Zealand, unless it's cloudy"
